With so many celebrity 'inspired' jewellery and brand name necklaces, bracelets and pendants, it's nice to come across something more genuine in nature. Like a detailed Spartan shield or the legendary Hammer of Thor. Duncroft Masterworks are making a range of pendants based on the " indomitable will of the warrior." So far they have five in production and are open to ideas on more. A Gadsen flag inspired piece will be available shortly.
The pendants are exquisitely detailed. The Spartan pendant features arrow marks on the shield, inscribed with the words "MOLON LABE." When the Persians demanded the 300 Spartans blocking their path lay down their weapons, King Leonidas shouted back "Molon Labe!" or "Come and take them!" (More details on the spartan shield pendant here)
The Hammer of Thor similarly has 'MIGHT' inscribed on its head. It hangs from a skull with the horns of a ram. The legend of Thor hails from the Vikings, a proud and strong race of people that plundered much of Europe. Thor was one of their gods, who rained down thunder and lightening from his Kingdom of Asgard. It is foretold that Thor will die in a battle with the serpent, Ragnarok, but not before killing it first. During this battle the stars will fall, the sky will blacken, and the whole earth will flood. Afterwards, the Son of Thor will appear to revitalise the earth and will carry Thor's hammer.
The attraction of the pendants will be obvious to those who have an obsession with the Spartans, the Vikings, Scottish or even the Roman legions. But there's something more to the pendants than just a unique and carefully crafted design.
Chaining the Hammer of Thor around your neck all day with the words 'MIGHT' staring back at you every time you catch glance at it, has a subtle effect on the psyche. It makes you stronger. It reminds you of an ideal to live up to, how strong you should be. Similarly, the Spartan shield that tips off your chest throughout the day. These were men that bowed before no man, who cared not for their own lives but to die the 'beautiful death' - in battle, protecting the ideals of Sparta from those who would savage it. The ideals of the warrior are inherent in the pendants, each with its own individual message. They remind us that as men, we too should aspire to greatness, to be unafraid, to stand up for what we believe and fight for what we know to be right.
With the message and traits of Thor dangling around my neck, I actually found myself with that bit more courage. I rang people I'd been putting off, did the things I'd been avoiding. Because you know what? Thor wasn't afraid, least of all of a fricking phone call! It was almost as if the pendants were a call to arms, to better myself.
Sure, we laughed too until we read this piece on the Duncroft Masterworks website; "The best instincts of man still thrive in a vanishingly small few. If you are among them, you know what it means to live without apology, do your duty, face your fears, make the hard choices, and push yourself forward when quitting would be easy."
Well that just sounds right up our street.
You can find more details on the Duncroft Masterworks site here. Each pendant comes in its own glossy black box and includes a poem card insert. The guys there are more than helpful. If you're looking for a unique pendant or something to inspire you to have that bit more courage and motivation, they are well worth checking out.
