Mills and Boon blamed for marital breakdowns

It wasn't the cheating. Or the raging alcoholism. Nor the endless nights away in the boozer or endless days playing golf. No, it was Mills and Boon that caused the end of your marriage. Susan Quilliam, a relationship psychologist (a what?) has penned an article in the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care which blames the novels for not just marital breakdowns, but also adulterous affairs and unwanted pregnancies.
Quilliam argues in her paper that the novels by Mills and Boon present an idealised notion of love far removed from the reality. “I would argue that a huge number of the issues we see in our clinics and therapy rooms are influenced by romantic fiction,” she writes. “What we see is more likely to be influenced by Mills and Boon than by the Family Planning Association.”
"To be blunt, we like condoms – for protection and for contraception – and they don’t," she added.
Quilliam argues that formal sex education for women may consist of a few hours over the course of a lifetime - but the romantic and scripted sex scenes in a Mills and Boon novel may be devoured by women as much as once a week.
But not to worry. If women are getting an unhealthy view of relationships from Mills and Boon, men are equally fukked up from watching porn. How anybody ever gets married these days and commits to true love is a mystery. Maybe there's a gang-bang afterwards.
