Hailing from Boston, Massachuesetts, she left boarding school at 15 with a determination to make it as an actress.
That break came in the classic Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction. Her smouldering depiction of femme fatal Mia Wallace earned her an oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
She appeared in a string of films after, none of which were spectacularly successful. However she appeared in another Quentin Tarantino movie, Kill Bill in 2003 that again confimed her place amongst the acting greats.
But it wasn't always so. Thurman as a teenager towered over all her class mates. Her feet were enormous. And the family constantly moved, meaning new friends and a new bout of social integration everytime. Her mothers friend suggested a nose job for her. When she was ten years old!

Despite average grades in school, she excelled in acting, so much so that talent scouts offered her the chance to act professionally after seeing her in a school play. However after moving to New York, she dropped out of acting school before graduating.
After Dangerous Liaisons the media were all over her so much that she moved to the UK for a year. Her co-star in Dangerous Liaisons, John Malkovich, said of her:
"There is nothing twitchy teenager-ish about her, I haven’t met anyone like her at that age. Her intelligence and poise stand out. But there’s something else. She’s more than a little haunted."
