You can look great with a scarf. You can also look like an idiot. Follow the below guide to avoid the 'idiot' category.
Are you Scarf Man? Scarves are one of those rare items of clothing that can make us look modern, retro, business like or laid back. Its a versatile piece of clothing. Not every man can wear a scarf. In general you must have a neck to pull off this item of clothing. Short men, and men with very thick or non-visible neck should avoid wearing scarves. Consider also your image. Scarf's are not suitable for thugs, hoodies or rappers. Bankers, hippies, singers and artists all love them.
Can you tie a Scarf? Its not just a matter of throwing it around your neck and swaggering up Main Street like Armani is visiting town. You have to wear it right too. In extreme emergencies you can tie it around your head. Otherwise the scarf should remain firmly in place around your neck. To tie a scarf: Fold the scarf in half and drape over your neck so that the loop hangs down one side and the 'fringes' down the other. Put the fringes through the loop and pull snugly around the neck. You should still be able to breathe. Loosen if any difficulties emerge.
Its a basic knot for a scarf. You can also 'bunch' up the scarf around your neck, but we recommend this only for fashion models and deranged people. If you have an overcoat on as well, the scarf should be worn inside the overcoat and protruding above in by an inch. Any overcoat should be fabric or cloth - not goretex, pvc, plastic or cardboard...
Does your attire demand a Scarf? You can't just don a scarf for the sake of it. It must both be practical to do so, and must co-ordinate with your other clothing. We do not recommend wearing scarves during the summer months. Winter, cold spring mornings and icy autumn evenings are ideal times. To co-ordinate your scarf with your attire its a good idea to treat it like you would selecting a tie. It should generally be of the same color or darker than your suit or attire. Brightly colored scarves (white scarves spring to mind) should only be worn by local mafia godfathers and those who have multiple close female friends to guide them through the process. Wool or Silk? What About Cashmere? Well we're really getting into it now. Silk scarves are great for more formal occassions such as winter weddings. Cashmere can look great with business suits and those trying to look rather wealthy. The classic winter look is accomplished by bulking up - and for this you need wool. Patterned Scarves
We really don't mind these so long as they are not huge bold pattern that draw the eye. If you are interested in patterned or colored scarves then pick ones with subtle patterns and stripes. They should be an afterthought for an observer who sees you, rather than immediately demanding attention. Modern Scarves Modern scarves such as the one above in the first image (Green Pyramid Scarf by Diesel) can look great - provided they are worn with modern clothing. If you want to look modern and hip go this route but make sure the rest of your attire is also up to date. |
