No self respecting survivalist, end of world conspiratist, doomsday predictor or even plain camper needs resort to banging two rocks together to make fire. We've moved on from the days of drilling wood into wood to create friction fire.
Lo and behold the Swedish Firesteel! Even if you never go camping its still a nice cheap gadget to show off for five minutes as you light the gas cooker. It was originally developed for the Swedish Department of defence and is now used by several armies worldwide. RELATED: View video of using the swedish firesteel
It produces a flash of 3,000oC so its easy to set fire to wet kindling or your neighbours shed. To use simply move the metal blade along the Firesteel creating sparks. So easy even I managed to produce a viable kindling fire in a matter of seconds. For those that really want the nitty gritty of the swedish firesteel it uses a magnesium alloy that consists of 7 metals, will work for about 12,000 strilkes (thats a lot of camping trips and demonstrations), and works even when wet. Its retailing for somwhere about $20 and under.
